his first day of kindergarten.

the kindergartener!

That is the one and only regular old smile photo I got of this boy on his first day.
It kind of drives me crazy that I rarely get the non-goofy faced photos, but he's a funny man. That's who this boy is. He likes to make people laugh and smile. And that makes me smile.

We took these before we walked up to school yesterday. He did just fine. The afternoon Kindergarten kids met in the library for a story before going to class. We walked him in, he took off his backpack, and we told him to have a great day and gave him a kiss (SO happy I can still give him a kiss at school!) and then we left. I got that lump in my throat, but I didn't cry.

Another school year has begun. It feels quite a bit different with Max now in elementary school.
Walking him up to school at lunchtime...
Walking up to get him in the afternoons...
Asking him about his day on our walk home and getting the usual, "I don't know." and "Nothing" and "Okay" answers...(any and all remedies for getting boys to talk about their day are welcome. boys young and old...)

My oh my, I'm not sure I'm ready for all of this...
all ready for school.

Glad he had a good first day and glad you didn't cry. :) We're never ready for this sort of stuff. I have always found it helpful to ask my boys specific questions. What did you do at circle time? Did you have recess? What did you do at recess? Who did you sit next to at lunch?
I usually get much better answers. Good luck! :)

Carla's questions are good. Anytime I ask a question that could be answered with a yes/no/I don't know they bomb. Gotta ask very specific questions. More importantly they will just start talking when it is least convenient for you to stop and listen. But take advantage of those moments. My boy who doesn't share ANYTHING directly afterschool WILL open up and give me information overload when I least expect it. :)
Glad his first day went well. And I'm jealous that you are walking distance to school.

What, you didn't do anything? You didn't smile? You didn't walk? Those are a few questions I'd ask. I'm a little joker. Kids can be funny. I love humor as well.

I always loved walking out the door & watching my mom wait for me. :)

I can understand the bittersweet moments.

Andrea, seriously. He is ridiculously CUTE!!! I can't even take it!! What a precious boy! Is he in half-day or whole day Kindergarten? I think you wrote something on FB that made me think half day, but I wasn't sure. We only have full day here. Hope he has an amazing year. He is just precious. Beautiful pics!

That is one seriously cute and excited little guy. I'm proud of you for keeping it together!! I'm with everybody else with the questions...specific is the key. Once they get used to asking, they just offering info. But you have to be persistent in the beginning.

So cute, Andrea.
And Evie is the same way. Drives me nuts. I have learned to also ask very detailed questions. I also ask her the favorite part of her day (and it's almost always recess or gym). I ask her who she sat by on the bus, how she was nice to her friends, what she learned from her teacher, what book she read at reading time...etc. Sometimes she really opens up and sometimes I have to pry it out of her.
I've found that having her gone during the day has almost made me a better mom when she's here. I am more engaged because I know my time is limited. Enjoy your time alone and relish your time when he's back with you!

He's so cute.

Be thankful for those half days for sure. :) My friends kids have to do all day preschool and kindergarten. There's no easing into it around here apparently.
